According to Eric Schmidt, former chairman of Google and Alphabet, one man had an outsize impact on the success of several Silicon Valley giants.

Bill Campbell, who passed away in 2016, coached Google’s Eric Schmidt, Apple’s Steve Jobs, eBay’s John Donahoe, and Twitter’s Dick Costolo on how to run their high-octane corporations. Schmidt co-wrote a book about Campbell’s influence, titled Trillion Dollar Coach.

As Schmidt recalls in this video, Campbell got to know his colleagues as people, and understood their underlying motivations and values.
