Editorial Policies

Our mission is to serve audiences with accurate, fair, insightful, and sophisticated business news that helps leaders understand the forces shaping business and the economy.

Independence and nonpartisanship

Quartz is an independent, nonpartisan, non-ideological news outlet. We believe journalism is at its best when it helps audiences make informed decisions, not when it attempts to persuade them of any particular worldview. Our coverage is driven by facts, data, context, and rigorous reporting — not by political agendas, policy advocacy, or by business or any other special interests.

We do not endorse political candidates or parties. Our journalists are prohibited from engaging in political activity that could call into question the impartiality of our coverage. And we report on all the companies and business leaders we cover without fear or favor. Quartz journalists are prohibited from directly owning any significant stock or other stakes in businesses that could undermine our reputation for independence and objectivity.

Accuracy and accountability

We view accuracy as the foundation of trust. Every story we publish is expected to be factually correct and contextually accurate. We confirm information with multiple sources whenever possible and attribute facts, data, and quotations transparently.

When factual errors occur, we correct them promptly and clearly, noting the change in the story itself. Readers who spot possible errors are encouraged to contact us.

Fairness and integrity

Quartz journalists are expected to approach all subjects with curiosity, an open mind, and a dispassionate, evenhanded approach to reporting and editing. We give companies, individuals, and institutions the opportunity to respond to claims about them prior publication whenever appropriate and possible.

We avoid conflicts of interest and disclose unavoidable ones. Our journalists may not accept gifts, favors, or preferential treatment from the companies or people we cover.

Advertising and sponsored content are always labeled as such, and they do not influence our news coverage.

Use of generative artificial intelligence

Quartz covers the business world at a moment when generative artificial intelligence is transforming almost every industry. Media and journalism are no exception. We believe our readers deserve both transparency and thoughtful experimentation in how AI intersects with our work.

Our newsroom uses AI tools at times to support idea generation, information gathering, data analysis, drafting and editing copy, and more. These tools can improve efficiency and spark creativity. But are not a replacement for the traditional tools of journalism. Whether AI tools are involved in any given piece of content or not, the same standards apply. All journalism we publish is reviewed, fact-checked, and approved by Quartz journalists before it is published.

Our approach is both thoughtful and experimental: We explore the possibilities of AI to better serve our audiences while safeguarding the standards of accuracy, independence, and accountability that define our work.

Transparency

We see our relationship with audiences as a partnership built on clarity and trust. That means being open about how we work, why we make editorial choices, and where our information comes from.

When we rely on anonymous sources, it is only when the information gleaned provides something valuable to audiences that could not otherwise be published. Editors must approve all use of unnamed sources.
