See what China sees when it searches for “Tiananmen” and other loaded terms

Blocked on Weibo is one of the most interesting websites on the internet: It lists and explains the search terms that are censored on China’s massive microblogging site Weibo. Last year, the site released a list of blocked terms related to the June 4th Tiananmen Square massacre.

Use the drop-down menu above to compare how image search results for some of those terms differ between Google, in the United States, and its equivalent in China, Baidu. Click on a image to see the search for yourself. (Baidu search is also censored abroad.) A new book calls China The People’s Republic of Amnesia, and the gaps in Baidu’s knowledge show how accurate that title is.
