Senate to work through weekend on fiscal cliff deal, otherwise, Obama demands up-or-down vote

After President Obama met with lawmakers from both parties on Dec. 28, Senators pledged to work through the weekend to find a deal to avoid the bulk of the fiscal cliff’s tax increases. In a news conference following the meeting, the president said that failure to find a compromise would result in Democrats bringing a middle-class tax relief bill to the floor, forcing Republicans to either block up-or-down votes on the legislation or allow increased tax rates on the wealthy to pass Congress.
