NASA astronaut captured footage of the northern lights from the International Space Station

Modeling social media maven and astronaut Chris Hadfield, NASA astronaut Scott Kelly has been wooing space enthusiasts with tweets of his cosmic adventures. Kelly’s latest is a time-lapse of the aurora borealis, otherwise known as the Northern Lights, taken just before sunrise from the International Space Station. He tweeted the video on Aug. 15, the 141st day of his #yearinspace mission.

The northern lights were named after the Roman goddess for dawn. The light show is typically a greenish color that can appear in a variety of shapes caused by collisions “between fast-moving electrons from space with the oxygen and nitrogen in Earth’s upper atmosphere,” according to NASA (pdf).
