Photos: McDonald’s restaurants transform into shelters for Hong Kong’s homeless

There are over 235 McDonald’s restaurants in Hong Kong. And in a city where real estate is famously costly, the 24-hour fast-food chain does more than just sling fries: At nightfall, its double arches offer shelter to those who have none, as photographer Suraj Katra shows in his series, I’m Livin’ It. 

“One night, I visited McDonald’s around 2am and saw the staff chattering and waking up all the sleeping people,” the 24-year-old tells Quartz.

“I thought it was unusual, so I started to visit other McDonald’s venues around Hong Kong. I ended up taking pictures in 20 different 24-hour McDonad’s across Hong Kong.”
