Watch: Garbage has been flooding the suburbs of Beirut for nine months and counting

Nine months ago, garbage began to “invade” the suburbs of Beirut. That’s when the Lebanese government closed a major landfill, with no alternative plan to deal with the city’s waste. Instead, it’s been left to pile up on the streets and waterways. Protests grew into the “You Stink” movement, a name that refers both to the mounting piles of trash, and to the widespread corruption of Lebanon’s political class.

“You Stink” organizers recently made a video recording the city’s plight. As you’ll see in the video above, it parodies a video the government released promoting tourism in Lebanon.
