Trump says there should be “some form of punishment” for women who have abortions

Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump struggled to describe his position on abortion today (March 30), saying at an MSNBC town hall that women should be punished for the procedure if it became illegal once again in the United States.

Pressed by moderator Chris Matthews, Trump stumbled into remarks that will not help his already unfavorable standing with women.

“There has to be some form of punishment,” Trump said. “For the woman?” Matthews asked. “Yeah,” Trump answered, nodding. He said the punishment would “have to be determined.”

When Matthews asked whether men should be responsible for an abortion as well, Trump answered “no.”
