Call them ravioli, or call them wontons, dumplings are endemic to many of the world’s cuisines. Even Uzbek cuisine.

In the video above, Damira Inatullaeva, an Uzbek cooking instructor with NYC-based League of Kitchens, shows us how to make barak, the country’s most beloved dumpling.

It likely made its way to Uzbekistan hundreds of years ago along the ancient silk road from China by way of traders on their way to Europe.

It has since embedded itself into the country’s culture and cuisine. Considered a special treat, it’s often served at Uzbek weddings.
