As one of the highest-ranking foreign policy officials in the Obama administration, UN ambassador Samantha Power is trying to change the world. When she spoke to graduating seniors at Yale this weekend, Power zeroed in on a huge force that she says is weighted against change: your Facebook feed.

In Power’s Class Day address at Yale, she said that in order to “live fully and leave the world a little better than you found it,” it’s crucial to understand the perspectives of those with whom you disagree. In an except from that speech above, Power argues that by allowing us to tailor our information intake to our existing tastes and opinions, social media stymies our ability to understand others.
