Japan’s quick sinkhole fix shows us what efficient infrastructure looks like

The Japanese lived up to their reputation as efficient and productive this week, putting infrastructure projects in other countries to shame.

A sinkhole swallowed up a five-lane intersection in the city of Fukuoka last Tuesday morning (Nov. 8). The gaping chasm was 30 m (98 feet) long, 27 m wide, and 15 m deep, almost half the size of an Olympic swimming pool. It took crews two days to fill and cover the sinkhole, then a couple more days to conduct safety tests. The street officially reopened yesterday (Nov. 15).
