American Express $AXP announced this week it will acquire Hyper, an AI-focused expense management startup backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, to build out automation tools for its commercial clients. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Hyper, which launched in 2022, has built AI agents capable of handling core expense workflows — including auto-categorizing charges, verifying submissions against budget limits and internal policies, generating reports, and nudging employees when filings are overdue. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2026, according to Pymnts.

This acquisition follows an earlier partnership between the two companies. In 2024, they launched the Hypercard Rewards American Express card, which already used Hyper's Agile Partner Platform to provide AI-powered expense agents to cardholders.
According to a company statement, Hyper's technology will be folded into an expense management platform AmEx plans to release before year's end, said Raymond Joabar, who leads Global Commercial Services at the company. "We're thrilled to welcome Hyper, a team with deep expertise in designing and deploying AI agents, as we build next-generation AI capabilities into our products and services," Joabar said in a statement.
The acquisition adds to a broader push by AmEx into commercial and AI-driven services. In a letter to shareholders last month, AmEx CEO Stephen Squeri described AI as creating a "structural shift" in how businesses operate, according to Reuters.
In a separate announcement this week, AmEx unveiled Agent Purchase Protection, a new policy under which card members who authorize an AI agent to shop on their behalf can receive coverage against erroneous charges, provided the agent has transmitted the customer's verified purchase intent to AmEx.
