These 2026 hybrids have the best real-world fuel economy, according to Consumer Reports

Consumer Reports tested a slew of hybrid cars to see what kinda of mileage they actually get

If you’re buying a hybrid, you want to make sure you’re getting significantly better mileage than a standard gas-powered vehicle. But can you actually believe the car makers' projected fuel economy?

Lucky for us, Consumer Reports tests cars on its own and figures out what the “real” mileage is. It listed the hybrids with the best mpg in each category (besides luxury vehicles).

Starting at $28,550, the 2026 Toyota $TM Prius gets 51 mpg, the best in class. “The Prius is quicker and sleeker than any of its predecessors, but it’s still a mileage champ,” CR said.

Midsized car

Starting at $29,100 and getting 48 mpg overall, the 2026 Toyota $TM Camry hybrid has the best fuel economy among hybrid mid-sized sedans. CR had plenty of praise to heap on the car. “The ride in our SE trim is firm yet still comfortable. Handling is responsive and very secure. The cabin is reasonably roomy, but the rear seat isn’t the most generous in the class," it said.

Large cars

Starting at $41,440 and getting 42 mpg overall, the 2026 Toyota $TM Crown has the best fuel economy of any large hybrid cars. CR said although it’s classified as a sedan, “its elevated ride height puts it somewhere between a car and an SUV.”

Small SUVs

Starting at $28,995 and getting 41 mpg overall, the 2026 Toyota $TM Corolla Cross Hybrid has the best fuel economy of hybrid small SUVs. CR said it preferred the hybrid model to the standard version. “The hybrid’s electric drive gives a smooth shove off the line, and the added power helps it shave about 1.5 seconds off the regular model’s 0-to-60 mph time,” CR said.

Midsized Two-Row SUV

Starting at $44,490 and getting 37 mpg overall, the 2026 Crown Signia has the best fuel economy among mid-sized two-row hybrid SUVs. CR particularly appreciated its 530-mile cruising range.

Three-row SUV

Starting at $45,570 and getting 35 mpg overall, the 2026 Toyota $TM Highlander Hybrid and its XLE version have the best mileage among hybrid three-row SUVs. CR was impressed by its mileage given its size.

Pickup truck

Starting at $28,145 and getting 37 mpg overall, the Ford $F Maverick gets the best mileage among hybrid pick-ups. “A bonus of the hybrid is its quietness advantage and smoother operation, free of the low-rev vibration of the nonhybrid version,” CR said.

Minivans

Starting at $40,420 and getting 36 mpg overall, the 2026 Toyota $TM Sienna gets the best mileage among hybrid minivans. “The cavernous interior has ample storage cubbies, seven USB ports, and second-row sunshades," the publication noted. "Hands-free sliding side doors are a convenience.”
