The best tire stores, according to Consumer Reports

You don't want to get cheap when it comes to tires, but there's nothing wrong with searching for the best deal

Car expenses are through the roof, and while it might be tempting, skimping on tires isn’t the best idea. But where you buy them can make a real difference in cost and service quality. 

Consumer Reports surveyed almost 25,000 of its members to find the best tire retailers, considering everything from selection to installation services — and, of course, price.

“Most places will do at least an adequate quality installation and have at least acceptable sales help, which were the attributes that contributed the most to overall satisfaction,” said Tess Yanisch, a senior research associate at CR. “But if you care about selection, the time it takes to install the tires, or the free perks a retailer might offer, the ratings table can help you

Les Schwarb Tire Centers

This West Coast chain topped the list thanks to great service, perks like free tire rotations, and skilled technicians. CR listed it as the number one recommended store.

Point S Tire

Point S has locations every from Alaska to Mississippi and has some of the lowest reported prices among any of its competitors. It’s a great option if you’re looking for a deal, CR noted.

Discount Tire

Discount tire has more than 1,200 stores in all but 10 states and a strong online presence too. It has some of the cheapest installation costs in the country among big chains, CR said.

Discount Tire Center

Not to be confused with Discount Tire, Discount Tire Center is a separate business that also comes CR-recommended, but it’s much smaller. The chain is only located in California, but is a great option for those nearby. “It guarantees it will beat any advertised price, states that its quotes are the price you pay, and backs sales with a 30-day or 500-mile guarantee,” CR said.

Dunn Tire & Auto

Another more local chain, Dunn Tire & Auto is only available in Central New York, northern Pennsylvania, and western Virginia. But CR recommends checking it out if it’s near you. “Dunn Tire & Auto is the only retailer in our latest survey to earn favorable or very favorable marks in every category that was rated,” CR said. “Its online configurator easily matches available tires to your car, and it provides an out-the-door price.”
