The cities where people have the most credit cards, according to WalletHub

In some places, residents are opening more than one card on average each quarter, WalletHub's study found

Opening a new credit card is often pretty easy—too easy even. And in some cities, Americans aren’t just opening one new card a year, but multiple.

WalletHub set out to find to find where people have the most credit cards, seeing where people are opening the most, how many cards they have, and how those numbers compared to the previous year.

“There isn’t a magic number of credit cards you should have in your wallet. It’s good to own multiple cards if you can manage them well, by paying on time, keeping your credit utilization low and waiting at least six months between applications,” said WalletHub editor John Kiernan. “However, if you’re opening new cards simply to spend beyond your means, you’ll quickly find many cards hard to manage.”

#7: Chesapeake, Virginia

Chesapeake took the seventh position. In the fourth quarter of 2025, residents opened an average of 1.31 new credit cards, which is an 11.70% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The average number of credit cards owned by residents reached 5.73, representing a 1.50% growth over the previous year.

#6: Santa Clarita, California

In sixth place, Santa Clarita saw a slight dip in new card activity, with the average number of new credit cards opened decreasing by 0.93% to land at 1.32. However, ownership remains high as residents held an average of 6.84 credit cards during the final quarter of 2025, a 2.33% increase from 2024.

#5: Anaheim, California

Anaheim holds the fifth spot and experienced a significant 15.31% surge in new credit card openings compared to the fourth quarter of 2024, bringing the average to 1.34 cards. Meanwhile, the average number of cards owned by residents rose to 5.68, a steady 0.51% increase from the year before.

#4: Irvine, California

Irvine ranks fourth and stands out for having the highest average ownership on this list. Residents owned an average of 7.07 credit cards in the fourth quarter of 2025, which is a 2.07% increase over the previous year. The average number of new cards opened was 1.27, representing a 7.55% climb from 2024.

Garland takes the third position with residents opening an average of 1.38 new credit cards in the fourth quarter of 2025. This reflects a 10.25% jump from the prior year. Ownership also saw an upward trend, with residents holding an average of 5.65 cards, a 2.49% increase compared to the fourth quarter of 2024.

#2: St. Louis, Missouri

Landing in second place, St. Louis showed the most aggressive growth in new card activity with a 21.80% spike. Residents opened an average of 1.42 new credit cards during the fourth quarter of 2025. Additionally, the average number of credit cards owned by residents was 5.30, a 1.09% increase from the previous year.

#1: Henderson, Nevada

Henderson claims the top spot on the list. Residents tied for the highest average of new cards opened at 1.42, which is an 18.73% increase over the fourth quarter of 2024. The city also maintains high ownership levels, with residents holding an average of 6.19 credit cards, a 1.77% rise from the year before.
