š A shock to EV sales

Good morning, Quartz readers!
Hereās what you need to know
The presidential campaign of Donald Trump confirmed it was hacked. The campaign said Iran may be to blame ā citing a Microsoft report from last week ā though who the hacker is has not been verified by Politico, which received the leaked documents.
The richest person in China is now Temuās founder. Colin Huangās coffers took a massive hit during the pandemic, but have since rebounded on the success of the international online marketplace.
TSMCās sales are surging because AI is āso hotā right now. CEO C.C. Wei told investors that last week, adding that all of the Taiwanese chipmakerās customers are integrating AI into their products.
Stellantis is laying off thousands of workers. The carmaker is also discontinuing one of its classic pickup trucks: the older version of its Ram 1500.
Amazon partnered with TikTok and Pinterest. Shoppers will be able to buy items directly from Amazon while still being in either of the social media apps.
China just hit an EV milestone
For the first time in history, more than half of all the cars that were sold in China last month were either electric vehicles or plug-in hybrid EVs.
The fact that 50.7% of new car sales were electric is especially stark when compared to sales just three years ago. Then, just 7% were electric. 7%!
How is this possible? Well, Beijing has heavily invested in its EV industry, allowing its domestic automakers to outpace almost all foreign competition. That investment has included substantial subsidies, ones that arenāt just helping homegrown makers. Tesla sales in the country were also charged up in July.
Indiaās Elon Musk just doubled his fortune
Bhavish Aggarwal, one of the worldās youngest billionaires whoās been likened to Elon Musk, more than doubled his wealth thanks to a big bet on a different kind of electric vehicle: scooters.
The 38-year-old Indian entrepreneur is still worth a fraction of Muskās wealth. But he added $1.5 billion to his net worth after his company, Ola Electric, went public on Friday ā bringing his total wealth to $2.7 billion.
But like Muskās Tesla, Ola hasnāt been without its issues: a long wait time for deliveries after initial launch, a toxic workplace culture due to Aggarwalās outbursts, a series of fire incidents, and a big recall.
