Americans aren’t as happy as they used to be. That’s according to Gallup, which ranked the U.S. 24th in its annual global happiness rating, the lowest position ever. But some cities are still content even if the national mood is down.

WalletHub set out to identify the happiest cities in America, ranking more than 180 cities by evaluating emotional and physical well-being, income and employment, and community and environment across dozens of metrics.

“Research shows that having more money only increases your happiness until you’re making at least $75,000 per year — anything more you earn likely won’t have an impact,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “Therefore, when deciding where to live to maximize your happiness, you’ll want to pick a city that offers more than just a decent average income.”

Lupo said the ideal city should “provides conditions that foster good mental and physical health, like reasonable work hours, short commutes, good weather, and caring neighbors.”
